Vampire didn’t attack Taylor Swift because she had Bad Blood – Jokes to introduce punctuating dialogue

Punctuating dialogue you must use – Jokes! This has to be one of my favorite tricks to pull out of my sleeve! Jokes lend themselves so well to dialogue for a couple of reasons:

  1. they are short! Long intimidating paragraphs of dialogue look SCARY!
  2. Jokes are funny. Students laughing and learning = success!

Jokes for kids are pretty easy to research and find! Lots of great jokes for kids exist and there are some great ways to incorporate them seasonally into projects for your students!

Punctuating dialogue can let’s be honest…less than fun! We love narrative stories and to write, but punctuating it can be tricky. Using jokes and macaroni is a great intro to get students involved, engaged, moving and laughing around what could be monotonous. Joke posters are great to display as well!

  • put jokes in Easter eggs to hunt and use
  • get holiday jokes for whatever holiday is coming up
  • get jokes about animals or a topic you are researching!
  • have a scavenger hunt to find jokes
  • make it an assignment for student to locate jokes and choose their favorite
  • showcase nonfiction humor books and choose jokes together as a class!

We loved using macaroni combined with this activity in school. It was an easy supply to get helped kinesthetic learners will placement of quotation marks and commas!
