The best 10 ways to use Task Cards in your classroom

Do you wonder how to use task cards in your classroom? Maybe you have a few ways you use task cards but are looking to get more out of them!

Task cards generally come with a task card recording sheet and a task card answer key. Task cards are usually one question on a small sheet of paper. Essentially just breaking up practice for a skill into smaller chunks but they are some great ways to incorporate task cards that keep students engaged in the classroom.

How to use Task Cards in Middle School or Kindergarten!

It could be middle school, kindergarten or high school these task card ideas could be used at any grade level to engage students in practice!

1. Task Cards as Centers

Laminate task cards used in your classroom or for a specific skill and use an easy task card recording sheet for students to fill out. *Bonus* have a self-checking Google Form for answers to make it even easier to assess!

Laminated cards and using dry erase markers really helps as well!

2. Task Cards as Movement

Flip task cards over and write movement words on the back of each! Have students do the movement task before moving on to the next card. This is great to keep students engaged!

3. Task Cards SCOOT

A personal fave….each student gets a card and a task card recording sheet. Set a timer on the board and when time is up Scoot – meaning move to the next number. This can be a circle or around the room. This works well for cards that are all the same level of difficulty or great for a review (even just cutting apart review questions)

4. Task Cards for game questions

Use Task Cards as questions for a game such a Jenga – answer one right to remove a block. But really task cards can apply to any board game! Make sure to have a task card answer key or way to check answers for students playing.

5. Task Cards as Formative Assessment

Use task cards in your classroom as a morning work or bell ringer or even as an exit slip. With questions already prepared these are great to lead into or finish class.

6. Task Cards as Test Prep

Any old task cards that we have used a center or throughout the year I keep and we reuse them especially with a task card answer key as test prep. I can differentiate which skills each student gets and it is easy for partners to work together.

7. Task Cards as Transition

Keep a stack right by the door and use task cards to transition when you have a few spare minutes. I love that this keeps the students on topic and easy to do!

You’ll be the talk of the town using task cards with this fun version. Those Sticky Hands will come in handy. Laminate and lay task cards face down and have students “grab” one and flip over with a sticky hand.

Task cards especially if prepped from year to year make a great EASY review for sub plans!
