Books and short stories to teach point of view are my favorite. Author’s point of view is such a highlight to teach because when I taught this, students had not heard this before. I’ve even listed my favorite mentor texts for point of view.

What are the best lessons to teach Point of View?

Videos teaching point of view must include Flocabulary! This video is addicting. It is FREE to watch the video (the activities to teach point of view that come with a paid subscription are great too though)

One of my favorite point of view lessons is from Teaching with a Mountain view! Using a single picture to help differentiate point of view along with FREE printables makes this a great place to start!

What picture books engage students in learning point of view?

Point of view mentor texts – a great list and foundation to have in your classroom.

Two Bad Ants – Any Chris Van Allsburg book is a winner but this one is great for books teaching point of view 3rd grade and up.

With clear references to the narrator, the ants are funny getting into trouble. Easily drawing students in. We love reading (or listening!) and writing down clues that help us understand point of view.

I, Doko has a powerful and simple message for students. Cultural perspective also plays a part in making it a great book to teach point of view

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs is a fun fractured fairy tale that makes looking for point of view a fun activity.

Tying in history, A. Lincoln and Me comparing the main character to Lincoln is a great short story for point of view!

The elusive 2nd person point of view:

My favorite book for 2nd person point of view is The Book That Eats People. 2nd person point of view stands out and is easily recognized but doing it in a funny way really engages students!
