Interactive Back to School Bulletin Board – Parents, Students, Staff focused!

A back to school bulletin board can set the tone for your classroom or building! Why not make it interactive?! Honestly…this could be used at any time of the year as well.

I have seen the trendy “wings” that artists paint in different cities and I thought how cool (and really pretty easy) to create in school!

This would make a great addition to your Back to School Open House Night – read all about how I set mine up!

Adding the “extra” message to your bulletin board

Rather than just add feathers that students colored, I wanted to add an extra layer of meaning to what this board could represent. I added writing prompts to the feathers of the board.

The feathers focus of this back to school bulletin board is on character traits, goals and outcomes for the future! You could use this multiple ways:

  • students from all classes complete a prompt and display in a main hallway
  • students complete a prompt a day (different colors) the first week and build a classroom display
  • different classes use different colors to complete a school display
  • PARENTS use a specific color and fill in a prompt for their child – how great for conference time/open house. They could also get a picture with it to share in the community!

I love how this could be a class, school, or parent focus and can be used SO. MANY. WAYS!

How to ASSEMBLE a wing display

Tried and true here because I thought this was something I could just Google (spoiler alert: that didn’t work) or just literally “wing it” (didn’t work either) so here’s exactly what I did:

Draft a starting outline. If you have a bulletin board and can outline with chalk or something that will wipe off that works best!

  1. Another way to outline is with Post Its (I have a saved highlight on my IG) that can show you as well. I used Post Its to highlight my top, middle, and bottom on both sides and worked from there.
  2. ALWAYS WORK OUT TO IN. Feathers need to overlap. In my head building out works best but NOT for this! Get an outline established and work inwards
    1. Use Stapler for bulletin boards or spray glue (this one was my fave!) worked great as well and easy to remove and readjust as needed!
  3. Step back and revised as needed. I’d step away and see adjustments in alignment or grouping to fix (spray glue made it easy to just re-position)
  4. ADMIRE your creation!

This is an awesome idea! Our mascot is an eagle so I can see if I change the wing shape it would look amazing too!
